I can’t recall anything from a decade that shaped me and, I feel no shame.
To me, the 90s represent a time when our communities were strong, our media was positive, and our identities were whole.
Of course, with any era in time, you’ll have aspects of culture or history that are better left unspoken about.
This post is not to gloss over those pivotal moments in Black American history. Instead, this is a celebration of the lasting impact and global domination of an aesthetic and vibe that has reached every corner of the world, in spite of the unfortunate events taking place on the ground.
The 90s were the 1st decade that used the power of fashion to create a holistic collective identity after the 70s. (The second being the natural hair movement of the 2010s).
This photo series was captured during a photography walk and creative meetup in Philly during 2021.
The theme was “The 90s” and naturally, the city’s creatives came out with a level of precedented passion.
Cheers to the generation that shaped us all and left an imprint on our hearts.
